Color Ring Projects: Bewick's Swan's
| |
|
For the last few years there has been a few collaring projects for the Bewick's Swan's. Some Bewick's Swan's
have been captured and provided with a neckband or leg ring with a code on it. The purpose of the rings is to
obtain valuable knowledge about small and vulnerable populations like the Bewick's Swan's. In this way the researchers
try to learn more about the places where the Bewick's Swan's stay (during migration). But the researchers also collect
information about behavior, habitat use, food, family ties and breeding success of individual birds. The breeding success
is also researched every year during the counting of the young around mid-November.
There are several different projects:
Blue Neckband Project:
In this project the captured Bewick's Swan's have been provided with a blue neckband with a white code.
The following codes have been used:
- Series 101P-900P: These birds have been ringed in Russia (South of Nova Zembla)
- Series 101U-200U: These birds have been ringed in Denmark and Russia
- Series 900U-999U: These birds have been ringed in Estonia and Russia
- Series 001K-100K: These birds have been ringed in Denmark
- Series 001P-008P, 091P-100P, S01-S19 and H01
If you have seen a Bewick's Swan with one of these neckbands you should contact one of the coordinators of
the project: Wim Tijsen or Henk Schobben. Some swans have lost the neckband but still have a leg ring, you
can also report these swans!
It's important to write down as much as possible of the following data:
- Date of the sighting.
- The code on the neckband.
- Place: as accurate as possible (Greenwich coordinates)
- Food: the kind of food the swan is eating.
- Size of the group the swan is with.
- Social status: If the swan has a partner or young (number of young) or not.
- Other special details
- Mail this data to:
or
If you report a Bewick's Swan, you will receive a print of the data of the observed bird at the start of
the next season. (for example, where the bird has been seen before).
Other Projects:
There are also a few other ring projects. If you see a swan with one of the following rings or neckbands,
please email your sighting to the following people:
-
